How do eyelash extensions work?
At Shumaila’s during eyelash extensions we use very fine false eyelashes made from specialised vegan material that mimics actual human lashes. These are then applied using eyelash adhesive to your own natural eyelashes. Depending on which type of lash extensions you have opted for, the technique of application is different for each.
Please note, we do not offer each type of eyelash extension at all of our locations. We recommend a phone consultation before booking, your lash tech at Shumaila’s will discuss the look that you prefer and recommend the type of lashes most suited to your requirements and advise which Shumaila’s salon offers it.
What are Russian Volume Lashes?
Volume lashes are designed to give you a glamorous and heavy look. We use super fine lashes to create fans that are applied individually to each one of your own eyelashes. Depending on how many hairs are used to create each fan you can get anywhere from 3D, 4D, 5D, 6D, 7D etc. lashes. The more lashes used in each fan, the more voluminous the results will be. This way we are able to tailor the final look to each of our clients, it is possible to have very heavy Mega Russian volume lashes and also very natural depending on the heaviness of the fans used.
Russian volume lashes take up 2 hours to apply, and require maintenance with infills every 2-3 weeks.
What are classic lashes?
During classic lashes only 1 false eyelash hair is applied to each one of your own eyelash hairs, unlike the multiple lashes that are applied in russian volume lashes. Also called 1D or 1 to 1 lashes, these give you a much more natural look. These are ideal if you just want to increase the length of your eyelashes so they look longer. If you have gaps in your eyelashes, classic eyelashes will not fill those gaps however russian volume eyelashes will.
Classic lashes take up 1.5 hours to apply, and require maintenance with infills every 2-3 weeks.
What are hybrid lashes?
Hybrid lashes are a combination of classic and russian volume lashes. On 50% of the eyelashes only 1D eyelashes are applied, and on the remaining 50% multiple eyelashes are applied 3D or more. We do these in an alternating manner to give a blended look. Hybrid eyelashes are not as heavy as russian volume lashes, but not as natural as classic eyelashes – they fit right in between.
Hybrid lashes take up 1.5 hours to apply, and require maintenance with infills every 2-3 weeks.
What are express volume lashes?
Express volume lashes are designed for people that do not want to commit to lashes long term, and are only getting it done for up to 2 weeks. They are applied in half the time as compared to russian volume lashes and offer a short term wear.
Express volume lashes take up to 1 hour to apply. To avoid damage to your lashes, they should be removed professionally after a maximum of 2 weeks.
What are cluster party lashes?
Cluster party lashes are designed for short term wear of up to 1 week. Clusters of thicker hair type are bunched together in 4s to give you an instant fuller look, they take around 15 minutes to apply.
What are strip eyelashes?
Strip eyelashes are a type of false eyelashes that are all stuck onto 1 strip, in different styles from glamorous and heavy to natural and thin. This full strip of lashes is applied directly onto your lash line. Strip lashes are for 1 day wear only, and take around 5 minuted to apply.
What are eyelash infills?
Eyelash infill is the process in which only the gaps of your eyelash extensions are filled in, rather than a full treatment being carried out. This is required as a maintenance every 2-3 weeks after having:
- Russian Volume Lashes
- Classic Lashes
- Hybrid Lashes
As a natural process each of your eye sheds 2-3 lashes a day which is:
21 Lashes in 1 Week
42 Lashes in 2 Weeks
63 Lashes in 3 Weeks
As your old lashes shed, new ones grow which leaves gaps in your Lash Extensions and so lash fills should be done every 2-3 weeks to keep your lashes looking fresh.

Lash Extensions Frequently Asked Questions
After having lash extensions you will need to follow some aftercare to keep them looking their best.
- Brush your lashes daily with the brush provided
- Do not pull your lash extensions
- Avoid rubbing eyes
- Do not use mascara on your lash extensions
- Do not use any oily product near your eyelashes
- Gently cleanse your eyelashes daily, use your fingertips and be very gentle. Avoid cotton
- You will see your lash extensions shedding daily, don’t be alarmed this is normal as your natural lashes do this daily but you just don’t notice them
- To extend the life of your lashes you will need a maintenance infill appointment every 2-3 weeks, this will help to keep them looking full.
We recommend not getting your eyelashes wet within the first 24 hours of having them applied. However, after the first 24 hours you should be cleansing your lashes daily to keep them clean and bacteria free.
There is often a misconception that you shouldn’t wet or wash your lash extensions, however you really should. You can use any oil-free gentle cleanser to cleanse your lashes daily.
We recommend using a gentle oil-free cleanser to cleanse your eyelashes daily. Any product with oil will weaken the bonds of your eyelashes, and cause them to fall prematurely.
Your natural lash cycle is around 6-8 weeks, which means it takes our body this amount of time to shed old lashes and grow new ones. We loose approximately 3 eyelashes per eye every day, whether we have extensions on or not. Over time the lash extensions also fall out with our own eyelashes.
We loose approximately 21 Lashes in 1 Week, 42 Lashes in 2 Weeks and 63 Lashes in 3 Weeks. Which means by week 3 you will see quite a lot of gaps appearing in your lash extensions. If you chose not to maintain your eyelashes with infills, then all of your eyelash extensions will completely fall out by around 6 weeks.
You can keep your eyelashes look full by visiting your lash technician at Shumaila’s every 2-3 weeks for an infill appointment.
If the correct aftercare advice is not followed then yes, lash extensions can be damaging to your own natural lashes. For example, if you have a habit of picking or rubbing your eyes, this will pull your natural lashes out along with your extensions and could lead to permanent gaps in your natural lash line.
Wearing very heavy lashes long term can also put stress on your natural lashes, causing them to shed prematurely.
