Aspiration involves using a needle to drain the fluid from the cyst. While quick, the recurrence rate is very high (up to 80%) because the cyst sac remains under the skin and simply refills. Surgical excision removes the entire sac and its root, offering a much lower recurrence rate and a permanent solution for most patients.
