Weeks 1–2 (Initial Healing)
The primary focus is protecting the incision. The lump is permanently removed, but the area will be slightly swollen. Keep the wound clean and avoid strenuous activity.
Weeks 3–4 (Suture Dissolution)
The absorbable stitches will dissolve naturally. The skin feels more relaxed, and you can resume all normal physical activities without restriction.
Months 2–3 (Scar Maturation)
The incision line is fully healed but may still appear pink or slightly raised. Gentle scar massage and silicone gel can be used to encourage flattening.
Months 3–6 (Final Maturation)

No. Squeezing a cyst forces the keratin contents deeper into the surrounding tissue, causing severe inflammation and infection. Furthermore, squeezing does not remove the cyst sac, meaning the cyst is guaranteed to refill and return.
When surgically excised by our GMC-registered surgeons, the recurrence rate is extremely low. This is because we meticulously remove the entire cyst sac intact. If any part of the sac wall is left behind, the cyst can reform.
If a cyst is actively infected (red, hot, painful, and inflamed), it cannot be fully excised because the local anaesthetic will not work effectively, and the sac wall becomes too fragile to remove intact. We may perform a minor incision and drainage first, and schedule the full excision once the infection has cleared.
There will be a small scar, but our surgeons carefully plan the incision along your natural skin tension lines to minimise its appearance. Over 3 to 6 months, the scar typically fades to a fine, pale line.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, meaning the area will be completely numb. You will feel a brief sting during the injection, but no pain during the surgery itself. Mild soreness afterwards is easily managed with standard painkillers.
Recovery is very fast. You can return home the same day and most patients resume normal daily activities immediately. You should avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for about two weeks to allow the incision to heal securely.
