Understanding Lipoma Removal Surgery

A lipoma is a benign (non-cancerous) tumour made of fat cells that grows slowly under the skin. They feel soft, doughy, and move easily when touched. While generally harmless, they can grow large enough to become unsightly, rub against clothing, or press on underlying nerves causing discomfort. Because the NHS rarely funds cosmetic lipoma removal, many patients seek private treatment.

At Shumaila's, our GMC-registered surgeons perform lipoma removal as a minor day-case procedure under local anaesthetic. We use the gold-standard surgical excision technique, which removes the entire lipoma along with its fibrous capsule. This is critical: if the capsule is left behind, the lipoma is highly likely to regrow. As standard UK clinical practice, all excised tissue is sent for histopathology to confirm it is benign.

Surgical Excision (Gold Standard)

  • The most effective method for permanent removal, suitable for almost all lipomas
  • The surgeon makes a precise incision and removes the lipoma and its surrounding capsule intact
  • This technique has an extremely low recurrence rate (1–2%) and allows for accurate laboratory testing

Liposuction Extraction

  • Reserved only for exceptionally large lipomas (typically over 5–6cm) in specific body areas
  • Uses a cannula to suction out the fat cells through a much smaller incision
  • While the scar is smaller, the recurrence rate is higher (10–15%) because the fibrous capsule cannot be fully removed

Safe and Surgically Proven

Lipoma Removal Surgery is a well-established procedure when performed by qualified surgeons under UK clinical governance.

At Shumaila’s London, all procedures are delivered by GMC-registered surgeons in CQC-registered environments, with individualised consent and aftercare.

It’s safe because

Performed exclusively by highly experienced, GMC-registered surgeons in our CQC-regulated London and Essex clinics

Carried out under local anaesthetic, completely avoiding the systemic risks associated with general anaesthesia

All excised tissue is sent for routine histopathology testing to definitively rule out rare malignant conditions like liposarcoma

We enforce a mandatory two-week cooling-off period after consultation, ensuring you have time to make an informed decision

And effective, due to:

Complete surgical excision of the fibrous capsule ensures the lipoma will not grow back in the same location

Incisions are meticulously planned along natural skin tension lines (RSTLs) to minimise visible scarring

The use of fine, absorbable sutures ensures secure internal tissue closure, preventing fluid build-up (seromas)

Multiple lipomas can be safely and effectively removed during a single surgical session

Expect results in

Weeks 1–2 (Initial Healing)

The primary focus is protecting the incision. The lump is permanently removed, but the area will be slightly swollen. Keep the wound clean and avoid strenuous activity.

Weeks 3–4 (Suture Dissolution)

The absorbable stitches will dissolve naturally. The skin feels more relaxed, and you can resume all normal physical activities without restriction.

Months 2–3 (Scar Maturation)

The incision line is fully healed but may still appear pink or slightly raised. Gentle scar massage and silicone gel can be used to encourage flattening.

Months 3–12 (Final Maturation)

The final, permanent result is achieved. The scar fades significantly, leaving a smooth, flat contour where the lipoma used to be.

Year 1+ (Permanent Contour)

Because the entire fibrous capsule was surgically excised, the removal is permanent. The lipoma will not regrow in that location.

Post-Operative Aftercare

Proper aftercare is essential to ensure the incision heals neatly and securely. Follow these UK clinical guidelines:

First 48 Hours: Keep the protective dressing completely dry. You may experience mild soreness once the local anaesthetic wears off, which can be managed with standard paracetamol.

Showering: You may shower after 48 hours, but avoid soaking the wound. Gently pat the area dry with a clean towel; do not rub the incision site.

Physical Activity: Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and activities that stretch the skin around the incision for 2 to 4 weeks to prevent the wound from opening.

Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing that does not rub or chafe against the healing incision. Avoid tight waistbands or straps directly over the area.

Scar Management: Once the wound is fully closed (usually after 3-4 weeks), you can begin gently massaging the scar with a recommended silicone gel to help it flatten and fade.

Frequent Asked Questions

No. A lipoma is a benign (non-cancerous) tumour made of fat cells. However, because they can occasionally mimic a rare malignant tumour called a liposarcoma, we send all excised lipomas for routine histopathology testing to provide complete peace of mind.
