Understanding Crow’s Feet

Crow’s feet, known clinically as lateral canthal lines, are wrinkles that form at the outer corners of the eyes. They are primarily dynamic wrinkles, meaning they are caused by the repetitive contraction of a specific muscle: the orbicularis oculi. This is the circular muscle around your eye that contracts when you smile, laugh, or squint.

Over time, and exacerbated by collagen loss from ageing and sun damage, these dynamic lines can become etched into the skin, remaining visible even when the face is at rest. These are then known as static wrinkles.

Topical eye creams can hydrate the skin, which may temporarily plump very fine lines, but they cannot prevent the underlying muscle contraction that causes these wrinkles to form.

How we at Shumaila’s can treat this

Our clinical approach focuses on treating the direct cause of dynamic wrinkles. It begins with a facial analysis to assess the strength of your orbicularis oculi muscle and the quality of the overlying skin. This allows us to create a precise treatment plan to smooth existing lines and prevent them from deepening.

Primary Treatment

Primary Clinical Treatment

Anti-Wrinkle Injections (Botulinum Toxin)

This is the gold-standard treatment for crow’s feet. Botulinum toxin is a neuromodulator that, when injected in small, precise amounts, temporarily relaxes the targeted portion of the orbicularis oculi muscle. By preventing the muscle from contracting so forcefully, the overlying skin is not creased, allowing the wrinkles to smooth out and soften dramatically.

Ideal for
Patients with dynamic crow’s feet (lines that appear upon smiling or squinting)

Results
A visible reduction in wrinkles within 3-14 days, resulting in a smoother, more refreshed appearance around the eyes

Management
The effect is temporary, with results typically lasting 3-4 months. Regular treatments are required to maintain the effect

Polynucleotide Treatment

While anti-wrinkle injections address the muscle, Polynucleotide Treatment addresses the skin quality. This injectable bio-revitaliser works at a cellular level to stimulate collagen, improve elasticity, and hydrate the thin skin around the eyes. It is an excellent complementary treatment to improve the texture and resilience of the skin, helping to soften static lines.

Ideal for
Improving the texture, thickness, and health of the skin around the eyes

Results
A gradual improvement in skin quality, luminosity, and the appearance of fine, static lines

Management
A course of treatments is typically recommended for optimal results
