Understanding Thin Lips & Volume Loss
- Collagen & Elastin Decline: The production of collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for skin’s structure and firmness, slows significantly with age. This leads to thinner, less resilient skin on the lips.
- Fat Pad Atrophy: The small fat pads within the lips diminish over time, contributing to a deflated appearance.
- Bone Resorption: The underlying bone structure of the jaw and maxilla can recede with age, reducing the structural support for the lips.
These factors combined can lead to thinner lips, a less defined vermilion border (the edge of the lip), and the development of perioral lines.
How we at Shumaila’s can treat this
Our clinical philosophy for lip enhancement is centred on creating balanced, proportionate, and natural-looking results. We respect the natural anatomy of the lip and aim to restore or enhance volume in a way that complements the individual’s facial features.

Primary Treatment

Dermal Fillers (Lip Fillers)
Lip augmentation using hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers is the gold standard for restoring or adding volume to the lips. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found in the body, making it a safe and well-tolerated option. A skilled injector can use different fillers and techniques to achieve various goals, from subtle hydration to significant volume enhancement.
Ideal for
Patients with genetically thin lips or those who have experienced age-related volume loss
Results
Immediate improvement in lip volume, definition, and symmetry. Results are tailored to the patient’s desired outcome
Management
Results typically last between 6 and 15 months, depending on the specific filler used and the patient’s metabolism. Minimal downtime is expected
Progressive Treatments
Supporting Perioral Treatments

Profhilo® (Perioral Area)
While not a lip filler, Profhilo can be used in the perioral area (the skin around the mouth) to provide deep hydration and stimulate collagen. This improves the health and texture of the surrounding skin, providing a better canvas for the lips themselves.
Ideal for
Patients who have both volume loss in the lips and poor skin quality or fine lines around the mouth
Results
Improved skin hydration and texture in the perioral area
Management
A course of two treatments is standard

RF Microneedling (for Lip Lines)
For patients who have vertical lip lines (smoker’s lines) in addition to volume loss, RF Microneedling is an excellent treatment. It stimulates collagen production to thicken the skin and soften these lines, creating a smoother appearance around the newly enhanced lips.
Ideal for
Patients with perioral lines and textural irregularities on and around the lips
Results
Gradual improvement in skin texture and softening of lines
Management
A course of 3-6 treatments is often recommended

Frequent Asked Questions
This is a common concern and is entirely technique-dependent. An experienced injector respects the natural proportions of the face and uses a conservative approach. The goal is to create a result that looks natural and refreshed, not overfilled. We always advocate for a “start low, go slow” approach.
Most patients report only mild discomfort. We apply a strong topical numbing cream before the procedure to ensure you are as comfortable as possible. The dermal fillers we use also contain a local anaesthetic (lidocaine) to further minimise discomfort during the injection.
Lip fillers use a hyaluronic acid gel to physically add volume to the lips. A “lip flip” uses a neuromodulator like Botox to relax a small portion of the muscle around the mouth, causing the upper lip to gently roll outwards, creating the illusion of more volume without actually adding any.
This depends entirely on your starting anatomy and your desired outcome. For a first-time patient seeking a very natural enhancement, we typically start with 0.5ml to 1ml of filler. The amount can be gradually increased in subsequent sessions if desired.
Downtime is minimal. You can expect some swelling, tenderness, and potentially some bruising for a few days after the treatment. Most swelling subsides within 48-72 hours, and the final result is typically visible after about two weeks.
