Understanding Clitoral Hood Reduction Surgery

The clitoral hood (prepuce) is the fold of skin that covers and protects the clitoris. For some women, this tissue can be excessively large, thick, or asymmetrical. An enlarged hood can cause physical discomfort due to constant friction against tight clothing, swimwear, or during exercise. It can also limit the natural retraction of the hood during sexual activity, reducing direct stimulation, and may cause aesthetic concerns, particularly if it appears disproportionate to the labia minora.

At Shumaila's, our GMC-registered surgeons perform clitoral hood reduction (hoodectomy) as a highly precise day-case procedure. The surgery removes only the excess folds of skin. Crucially, the clitoris itself, its underlying anatomy, and its delicate nerve supply are completely untouched throughout the procedure. We offer this as a standalone surgery or combined with labiaplasty for a fully balanced aesthetic result.

Standalone Hood Reduction

  • Ideal for patients whose primary concern is excess tissue specifically over the clitoris, causing friction or aesthetic imbalance
  • Performed under local anaesthetic with sedation, allowing you to go home the same day
  • The surgeon uses a bilateral excision technique, placing incisions parallel to the clitoral axis to preserve nerve distribution

Combined with Labiaplasty

  • The most common approach. Reducing the labia minora without addressing an enlarged hood can leave the hood looking disproportionately prominent
  • Combining both procedures in a single session ensures a neat, balanced, and natural-looking result
  • Performed under TIVA (Total Intravenous Anaesthesia) for maximum comfort, taking approximately two hours

Clitoral Hood Reduction

Clitoral Hood Reduction precisely addresses the treatment area, with results tailored to your anatomy and goals under expert surgical care

Expect results in

Weeks 1–2 (Initial Healing)

The primary focus is rest and hygiene. The area will be swollen and tender. You must avoid friction, wear loose clothing, and take time off work to allow the delicate tissue to heal.

Weeks 3–4 (Suture Dissolving)

The absorbable stitches will naturally dissolve and fall away. Swelling continues to subside, and daily activities become much more comfortable.

Weeks 5–6 (Clearance for Activity)

By the six-week mark, your surgeon will typically clear you to resume all normal activities, including gym workouts, cycling, and sexual intercourse.

Months 3–6 (Final Maturation)

Any residual, microscopic swelling resolves completely. The scar tissue softens and fades, leaving a natural, balanced appearance and permanent relief from friction.

Hygiene: Shower only after 48 hours. Do not take baths, use hot tubs, or swim for at least 4 to 6 weeks. Pat the area dry gently with a clean towel,do not rub.

Clothing: Wear loose-fitting cotton underwear and avoid tight trousers, jeans, or leggings for the first few weeks to prevent friction and irritation.

Activity Restrictions: Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, cycling, and horseback riding for a full 6 weeks to protect the healing tissue.

Sexual Activity: You must abstain from all sexual intercourse and direct stimulation of the area for at least 6 weeks, or until cleared by your surgeon.
