Understanding Extra Nipple Removal Surgery

An extra nipple, medically known as a supernumerary nipple or third nipple,is a very common, harmless developmental variation affecting up to 2% of the population. They typically appear along the embryological ”milk line” running from the armpit down to the groin, and are often mistaken for moles or skin tags. While completely benign, many people choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons, or because they chafe against clothing and bra straps.

At Shumaila's, our GMC-registered surgeons perform extra nipple removal as a straightforward day-case procedure. We carefully assess the anatomical type (Kajava classification) to ensure the entire structure is removed cleanly, leaving a smooth contour and a discreet, fine-line scar.

Polythelia (Nipple Only)

  • The most common presentation, where only the extra nipple is present with no underlying breast tissue
  • A simple, superficial excision is performed under local anaesthetic
  • Recovery is extremely fast, with the resulting fine scar fading significantly over time

Polymastia (Nipple & Glandular Tissue)

  • Less common, where the extra nipple is accompanied by underlying accessory breast tissue
  • This tissue can sometimes swell or become tender during hormonal cycles
  • The surgeon performs a slightly deeper excision to remove both the nipple and the underlying glandular tissue completely, preventing future swelling

Safe and Surgically Proven

Extra Nipple Removal Surgery is a well-established procedure when performed by qualified surgeons under UK clinical governance.

At Shumaila’s London, all procedures are delivered by GMC-registered surgeons in CQC-registered environments, with individualised consent and aftercare.

Expect results in

Weeks 1–2 (Initial Healing)

The primary focus is protecting the incision. The extra nipple is permanently removed, but the area will be slightly swollen and sensitive. Keep the wound clean and avoid strenuous activity.

Weeks 3–4 (Suture Dissolution)

The absorbable stitches will dissolve naturally. The skin feels more relaxed, and you can resume all normal physical activities without restriction.

Months 2–3 (Scar Maturation)

The incision line is fully healed but may still appear pink or slightly raised. Gentle scar massage and silicone gel can be used to encourage flattening.

Months 3–12 (Final Maturation)

The final, permanent result is achieved. The scar fades significantly, leaving a smooth, flat contour where the extra nipple used to be.

Year 1+ (Permanent Contour)

Because the tissue was surgically excised, the removal is permanent. The area will age naturally in harmony with the rest of your skin.

Post-Operative Aftercare

Proper aftercare is essential to ensure the incision heals neatly and securely. Follow these UK clinical guidelines:

First 48 Hours: Keep the protective dressing completely dry. You may experience mild soreness once the local anaesthetic wears off, which can be managed with standard paracetamol.

Showering: You may shower after 48 hours, but avoid soaking the wound. Gently pat the area dry with a clean towel; do not rub the incision site.

Physical Activity: Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and activities that stretch the skin around the incision for at least two weeks to prevent the wound from opening.

Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing that does not rub or chafe against the healing incision. Avoid tight waistbands or bra straps directly over the area.

Scar Management: Once the wound is fully closed (usually after 3-4 weeks), you can begin gently massaging the scar with a recommended silicone gel to help it flatten and fade.

Frequent Asked Questions

No. Supernumerary nipples are a harmless developmental variation. However, because they contain the same tissue as normal breasts, they are subject to the same rare conditions. For complete peace of mind, we send all removed tissue for routine histopathology testing as standard UK practice.
